My Writing Journey

My writing journey began when I was 10 years old. I remember standing at our farmhouse sink, washing dishes by hand when a thought entered my mind. “You should write a book someday.”

That’s too hard, I thought in response and I pushed the thought away until I was 19.

“You should consider a career in writing.” The advice came from an instructor at the Bible College I was attending. I prayed about it, but I still felt completely unqualified.

I learned God truly does “qualify the called.” Three years later I was at a secular college, writing for the school newspaper. After graduation, I started as a full-time reporter at a county newspaper.

In 2009, I experienced an undeniable call from God to write and publish for the Kingdom. I wanted to write and publish books that showed how God works in our lives in this current generation.

I was working at the newspaper, and I had just started my Master’s degree. I had no idea when I would find the time to write a book, or what I would write. I continued to focus on my education and trusted God would open the door at the right time. I began praying God would bring me a story to write.

In July 2011, I met Angel Cortello. Angel had an amazing testimony of deliverance, but she needed someone to help her write. I received multiple confirmations this was to be my first book to write. Angel: The True Story of an Undeserved Chance. Eleven months later, in June of 2013, we had the book in hand and I had officially established Our Written Lives, LLC.

Through the next year, I began working with independent authors to publish their books. I wanted to provide a financially feasible opportunity for authors to access professional publishing services and full distribution options.

In 2014, I wrote my next book, Called to Write, Chosen to Publish, which offers 20 inspirational thoughts for Christian writers, and shares the story of my personal call to write and publish.

Later, I had the book translated into Spanish, Llamada a Escribir, Elegida a Publicar: Inspiración para escritores Cristianos.

In 2016, I finished my third book, Facing Myself: An Introspective Look at Cosmetic Surgery. I weave my personal story throughout the book as I share what I’ve learned, along with research, history, and statistics. I also offer discussion questions at the end of each chapter. This not only helped me process my decision about cosmetic surgery, but the book also provides tools to make a well-rounded, mature, and truly informed decision about cosmetic surgery.

In 2021, I published my most recent book, A Love for the Strangers: What the Bible Says About Loving Immigrants.

My current writing journey is focused on developing writing programs, editing and publishing for other authors, and mentoring future publishers.

As I look back over my life, I can see the wonderful plan God has had all along. I give God all the glory for Our Written Lives and all the wonderful things He has yet to accomplish.
